Does Welded on Trailer Coupler Have to Be Cut Off behind Coupler to Replace

Question:

You guys are great at answering quickly. I purchased a 5x8 utility trailer that has a 1 7/8 inch coupler that is welded to the frame. I noticed you sell 2 inch bolt on couplers. My tailer has a 2000 lb. GVWR. My hitch is 2 inch and I so much prefer 2 inch hitches and balls. The easy answer is just use the 1 7/8 inch trailer ball which I hate. To put your 2 inch coupler on I would have to cut the 2 inch bar off because the 1 7/8 inch coupler is welded. I do not want to shorten or do that to the tow bar. I mean what about my class 3 hitch that can handle 350 tongue/3500 towing. Will the 1 7/8 ball allow same tonque weight and same tow capacity as the 2 inch coupler and ball. My main concern is tongue weight even though in this particular case this trailer is rated 2000 max. But I like heavier items at front of trailer over tongue for better stability.

If you take the trailer to a welder they will be able to remove the welded on coupler you have without having to just hack off the end of the trailer.

Then you could either weld or bolt on the part # DL13897 which is a fit for 3 inch wide trailer channel.
