Troubleshooting Trailer Brakes On A Barrett Gooseneck Trailer

Should the wire for the brakes be live when unhooked to the brakes and show no current when hooked up to the brakes

On your Barrett Gooseneck Trailer, if your brake magnet wires are not connected to the trailer brake wires, you will most likely be getting a current from the trailer breakaway battery on one of the two wires. You need to connect one of the wires to the magnet and one of them to ground to make the system function properly. Without the ground to complete the circuit there will be a draw from the magnet.
