how do i determine the right kind of catalytic converter my car needs for a 2003 Mitsubishi eclipse GS 2.4 liter engine

For a catalytic converter that is in line with the Federal Emissions you can use either a universal fit, like part # MF99004HM, or a more custom fit like parts # MF49459, # MF93195, # MF50824, and # MF49314.
You will want to choose one that performs like your OEM converter so as not to set off any error codes.
The universal fit # MF99004HM and part # MF50824 do not have an O2 port if that is something that you are looking at. Part # MF50824 doesn't have air tubes either.
Keep in mind that none of these are for California Emissions.
