Recommended Brake Controller And Wiring For 2011 Dodge Durango

Question:

We have a 2011 Durango, no tow package. Hitch receiver installed. Need wiring kit for a travel trailer that has tandem brakes 4, running, brake, RandL turn lights, trailer 12 volt battery charging from tow vehicle. We are aware that we need a proportional controller as well. The trailer plug is a round 7-way. What kit s do I need to purchase from etrailer? Thanks current customer

Thanks for being a return customer. I will make some recommendations that will work for your 2011 Durango.

The trailer wiring harness I recommend for you is the T-One Wiring Harness # 118552. This plugs into the vehicle wiring harness behind the driver and passenger side. You will need to remove the tail lights to get to the harness. You will then need to run a hot lead wire to the positive battery post.

To put a 7-way trailer connector on the vehicle you will then need part # ETBC7. This will give you a working 4-way and a working 7-way trailer connector on your Durango. This plugs into the 4-way and you then need to run the remains wires as shown in the attached drawing. The drawing shows how wiring is run for the # ETBC7 and a brake controller.

When working with electrical connectors I recommend using dielectric grease like part # 11755. This keeps dirt and moisture out of the electrical connections and helps prevent corrosion.

The brake controller I recommend is part # 90885. This is our most popular because it is easy to set up and operate.

The 12V power from your battery will only maintain the charge on the trailer. It will not charge the battery. The best way to charge your battery is to use shore power when available. For that, I recommend the NOCO Genius # 329-GENIUS5.

There is a way to charge the battery on your trailer with your vehicle. This is done by using the Redarc In-Vehicle BCDC Battery Charger - Dual Input - DC to DC - 12V/24V - 40 Amp # 331-BCDC1240D. This can be attached to the alternator on your vehicle and if you have the proper gauge wire, will provide a charge for the trailer battery.

I have attached a drawing that shows how the wiring is done using this charger.
