Draw-Tite Activator Manual Override Works But Pressing the Brake Pedal Does Not on a 2011 Ford F-150

Question:

2011 F-150. Im not understanding why the controller will activate the brakes using the override switch, but the brake pedal recently stopped working. The controller shows only a red dot when override is pressed. It shows no activity at all when the pedal is pressed. The controller is connected to the truck using the suggested adapter harness for this truck. All fuses test ok. All wiring is clean with good connections. All lights and other features of the umbilical work fine.

It sounds like the problem is between your Stop Light Switch and your Draw-Tite Activator # 5504 itself. You will want to be sure to check all of your grounds as sometimes that can cause weird things to happen.

What I recommend doing is testing different areas for that wiring. You can use a Circuit Tester # PTW2992 to pierce the wire to the Stop Light Switch on your 2011 Ford F-150's side of the connector that hooks up to the Plug-In Adapter # 22292. This will be the wire that corresponds to the placement of the Red wire on the adapter (should be in cavity 10 on the adapter).

If that Red wire has no power then you will want to check the Stop Light or CHMSL fuse as well.

If the wire up to the connector on your F-150 side of the adapter is getting signal when you press your brake pedal then you will want to use this same method to test the Red wire on the adapter. If both ends of the wiring on the connector is getting signal then you will want to test the pin location on the connector that goes into the Activator. If that is receiving signal then you know for sure that there is a signal getting to the Activator.

If this is the case then I you will need to get a new brake controller as the Activator has problems with its internal components. I recommend going with the Tekonsha Prodigy P3 # 90195 as it is reliable, easy to setup, and easy to use. It can actually plug right into the adapter that you already have (provided that the adapter is good).

If you are getting a signal up to the adapter but not all the way through the adapter then you will simply need to replace it with part # 22292.

After following these troubleshooting steps if you are still experiencing issues let me know and I can help you troubleshoot further.
