Recommendation For Locks To Prevent Theft Of A Camper Trailer

Question:

I see many different styles of locks to prevent theft of a trailer. I am pulling a camper trailer worth about $10,000. I see the need to protect it from theft, but I am very confused about the effectiveness of the various kinds of locks available. How effective are the various kinds of locks and what kind do you recommend? Thanks.

If you are wanting to lock the trailer to your 2002 Isuzu Trooper and you have a 2 inch hitch receiver, I would recommend the etrailer Trailer Hitch Receiver And Coupler Lockset, part # e99039. This is a set of locks that will lock the ball mount to your tow vehicles 2 inch hitch and also lock the trailers coupler to the hitch ball. Both of the locks can be keyed alike, so only one key is needed for both locks.

Locking your trailer at both connections will add time when somebody is trying to steal your trailer. The more time you can add to keep somebody from stealing your trailer the more chance the thief will leave it alone.

You can also use just the coupler lock on the trailers coupler, when it is not attached to the tow vehicle, to keep the coupler latch lock from being opened and connected to any hitch ball.

Another recommendation would be the Master Lock Trailer Hitch Receiver Lock and Coupler Lock Set, part # 3794DAT. This kit includes a universal coupler lock to prevent towaway theft; an adjustable latch lock to ensure that your trailer won't be unhooked from the coupler; and a trailer hitch receiver lock that fits 1-1/4 inch and 2 inch hitches. This lock set is also keyed alike.

I am including a link to a video review on the Master Lock set.
