Ball Mount to Allow Towing and Use of Hitch-Mounted Accessory
Question:
hi, i have a question about the Curt Dual 2inch Receiver Tube Adapter, 8inch Extension Item # D-192. our travel trailer has a hitch weight of 400 lbs. with this dual adapter, and the hitch for the trailer, the hitch ball would end up being out about 20 inches from the truck. that seems way to far - and would it still handle at least 400 lbs? do you have any other solutions for mounting a goalpost rack, and towing a travel trailer at the same time? thank you

Expert Reply:
Use of any hitch extender/adapter like the Curt Dual 2-Inch Receiver Tube Adapter # D-192 will cause a loss of 50-percent of the rated hitch capacity. This happens precisely for the reason you alluded to: greater distance from the hitch tube to the actual weight load that is on it.
A better option for you is part # D210. This item DOES NOT reduce hitch capacity but it does provide both a ball mount platform to allow you to install a hitch ball of the appropriate size to enable towing AND to use a hitch-mounted accessory item such as a 2-inch load support. The combined tongue weight (TW) rating for the entire unit is 750-lbs, which should be plenty for your application.
You can see complete dimensions for this item on the main product page which is linked for you.
