Will Pinhole Placement on RP54970 Affect Performance?
Question:
I have a Coleman 26 ft TT that I measured the tongue weight to be around 875 lbs using the bathroom scale method. I am using the Reese Strait-line weight distribution with 1,200 lb spring bars as well as the dual-cam system to combat sway. I occasionally still feel sway when towing, so I have been trying to make adjustments to make it better. After studying the hitch bar ratings I realize I have been using the 1,200 lb hole rather than the 1,000 lb hole when towing my hitch. My 1st question is: will this negatively effect my trailering performance to be in this hole rather than the lower rated one? My second concern is tow ball height relative the the coupler. My coupler measures 21 inches when the trailer is level. The closest I can get my tow ball is either the same 21 inches or 22-1/2 inches. Most of the references say to have the ball no more than 3/4 inches to 1 inches above the coupler. So the second question is: How important is this measurement and which direction would be better to try and achieve? I am trying to reduce the amount of rear-end squat when coupled up and be able to keep the front end distance equal to the uncoupled height and finding difficulty mostly with the back end. Thanks in advance for your help.

The pinhole that you were using with Reese Shank # RP54970 is simply one that is going to provide more weight capacity. As for your tow ball and coupler, you want to be as level as possible. It is an important number because a level trailer is going to handle better, and reduce the amount of strain on your vehicle, trailer, and tires. I have added a link to a help article on weight distribution systems for you which you may find helpful.
If you are dealing with rear squat, there are rear suspension systems available you can use to help level you out. If you tell me the type of vehicle you are using I can recommend a system for you.
