How To Choose The Proper Weight Distribution System
Question:
I will be pulling a 2018 Wolf Pup 18To with a 2004 Ford Expedition. I expect the tongue weight to be around 500 pounds. With the cargo in the rar of the tow vehicle I do not think that 600 pounds max for the hitch is enough. My question is if the fastway e2 800/8000 lb is good? The Equalizer jumps to 1000/10000 and theat seems like overkill. is the tongue weight range all that matters or can the max trailer weight rating be too high and cause an issue? Thanks

The ideal total tongue weight for a system rated from 400-800 lbs, in the case of the Fastway e2 Weight Distribution part # FA94-00-0800, is around 600-700 lbs. If your tongue weight is within that range, then this system will suit your needs just fine. The optimal tongue weight for the Equal-i-zer Weight Distribution System part # EQ37100ET is around 800-900lbs.
The main factor to consider when choosing a weight distribution system, is absolutely tongue weight. As a general rule of thumb, you will want the tongue weight to be in the middle, near the top of the rating for a weight distribution system. For example, the optimal tongue weight for a system rated at 400-800 lbs. is 700 lbs. The main thing you will need to be sure of is that you do not exceed the weight capacity of the system.
Before selecting a weight distribution system, you will need to ensure your hitch is compatible for use with a weight distribution system. If you are able to use a weight distribution system, I recommend a Equal-i-zer product as they are a top of the line option. Additionally, the Equal-i-zer weight distribution systems have an integrated 4-point sway control system to not only reduce trailer sway but also help prevent sway from happening.
The Fastway E2 is also a great system, however the built in sway controls on the Equal-i-zer far outweigh those on the Fastway E2. If you find your total tongue weight to be around 700-800 lbs, I recommend going with the Equal-i-zer over the Fastway E2.
