Will The Hopkins Agility Brake Controller # HM47294 Work On A 2001 Chevy Silverado Towing A Camper

Question:

will the hopkins agility work well on a 2001 chevy silverado 1500, for towing a 3000lb pop up camper? The truck has a factory installed wiring harness just below the dash, is this unit all set up to just plug-in and go, no cutting wires etc..? Could I get away with a cheaper hopkins controller for this set-up? Thank you.

On a 2001 Chevrolet Silverado 1500, the Hopkins Agility Brake Controller, part # HM47294, will work well when towing your 3000 lb camper. The Agility is the least expensive proportional brake controller I carry. We do have a couple of time-delayed brake controllers for less money but I would not recommend the time-delayed controllers. The proportional brake controllers will work better because they do not have any delay from when the brake pedal is pushed and when the unit sends out a signal to the trailer brakes.

If your 2001 Silverado has a factory installed 7-way at the rear of your vehicle then there will be a brake control adapter plug located in the electrical junction box on the drivers side, left of the brake pedal. This adapter will plug into the second slot from the left on the top row of the junction box. See picture to the right of the location of the junction box on your vehicle. The other end of the wires will need to be hardwired to the wires on the back of the Agility brake controller. If the factory brake control plug can not be found I do offer the Draw-Tite Universal Brake Control Wiring Adapter, part # 3025-S. This adapter will install the same way as the factory plug.

Instead of having to hardwire your factory adapter to the brake controller I would recommend to use the Hopkins Brake Controller with GM Wiring Adapter, part # HM47294 and # HM47795. This is the Agility brake controller with a plug-in GM wring harness. This wiring harness will allow you to plug one end of the adapter to the Agility brake controller and plug the other end into the junction box under the dash.

With those connections made you will be ready to connect your camper to the 7-way on your truck and setup the Hopkins brake controller to apply the trailer brakes correctly.

I am including a link to a FAQ page on installing a brake controller on Chevrolet trucks and a link to the instructions on the Hopkins Agility brake controller.
