Cause for Failure of 4.80-12 Trailer Tires That Are Not Overloaded or Incorrectly Inflated
Question:
Do they make a load D in this size tire? I have a 1988 starcraft and this 4.8x12 C is recommended, but I find that I blow them out, even when I am careful and constantly checking the tire pressure. I put heavier objects in my truck and have less weight objects in my camper.

Heat is the cause for most trailer tire failures, and that heat can come from any of three causes: incorrect inflation pressure (high or low), overloading the tire beyond its weight capacity or by driving too fast for the tire. All three conditions cause excess heat and can lead to failure.
In your tire size 4.80-12 we have only Load Range B and Load Range C tires and tire/wheel combinations. Both our tires in this size and our tires/wheels with your 4-on-4 bolt patterns can be seen on the linked pages.
Since you noted that you maintain correct cold psi pressure and avoid overloading the tires the chances are that your blow outs could result from driving speed. Unless specifically stated otherwise, trailer tires are rated for 65-mph. You might simply need a higher-speed-rated tire like the Taskmaster # TTWSF48012C. This tire carries an M speed rating, good for up to 81-mph.
