Why Can't Trailer Breakaway Kit Use Main Trailer Battery
Question:
Do I need a separate battery on my TT to run the breakaway system or can I just use the 12v battery already on the TT?

You'll want to use a breakaway battery kit. Reason being the smaller battery of the breakaway kits like the # 2028 are small enough that they can be kept at a full charge from the trailer wiring 12 volt power circuit and nothing else will be drawing off of it. Since the other battery of your trailer would be too large to be kept charged and will have other accessories draining it occasionally it just wouldn't be a good idea.
