How To Determine If You Need A Weight Distribution System On A 2017 Toyota Highlander
Question:
I just purchased a 2017 Toyota Highlander with a tow package. I have never towed before. I want to buy a small trailer, around 3000 lbs. Do I need a weight distributor/ anti-sway... Does this go on the trailer or on my car? I am getting mixed info from trailers sales reps...who are probably just trying to sell me a trailer. I would appreciate any and all advice.

Although it is not necessarily required to use a weight distribution system while towing, it is recommended to use one if your trailer weighs more than 50% of your vehicle's weight or if you experience vehicle sag while towing. The weight distribution portion of a system may not always be necessary also, the added benefits of sway control will prove well worth the added expense.
In your case, a 2017 Toyota Highlander weighs in at 4,165 to 4,655 lbs from factory. If you plan to be towing a trailer with a gross trailer weight(GTW) of 3,000 lbs. then I recommend using a weight distribution system. In order to determine the correct weight distribution system for your needs, you will need to first determine the total tongue weight of your setup. Total tongue weight is calculated by adding the tongue weight of your ready to tow trailer in addition to any weight stored behind the rear axle of the tow vehicle. The trailer tongue weight is typically 10 to 15% of your trailer's GTW. To find this, I recommend using the Trailer Tongue Weight Scale part # e99044.
For a tongue weight between 200 to 600 lbs, I recommend using the Equal-i-zer Weight Distribution System part # EQ37060ET as these are one of most popular weight distribution systems. It features an integrated sway control system and does not require drilling for installation. The weight distribution system is installed on the a-frame of your trailer and attached to the tow vehicle in the hitch receiver with the use of a shank.
I have attached a weight distribution help article in addition to a product review of the Equal-i-zer system for your review.
