Which Roadmaster Base Plate Kit and Other Parts Do I Need To Flat-Tow My 2005 Saturn Vue
Question:
What are the correct base plates to use with a 2005 Saturn Vue.

If your 2005 Saturn Vue has the 4-cylinder engine, you will need Roadmaster XL Base Plate Kit, part # 3111-1. If you have the 6-cylinder model, you will need Roadmaster XL Base Plate Kit, part # 3121-1. Note that part # 3121-1 is not compatible with the Redline model. Both Base Plate Kits, part # 3111-1 and # 3121-1 feature removable drawbars, so when the vehicle is not being towed, the base plates are less visible.
In addition to base plates, you will also need a tow bar, wiring or lighting kit, and a supplemental braking system to flat-tow your 2005 Saturn Vue, if you do not already have these items.
The Roadmaster Falcon 2 Tow Bar, part # RM-520, would be a good option for a tow bar, as it is a non-binding tow bar. A non-binding tow bar makes for easier hook up and disconnecting of your Saturn.
You will also need the Roadmaster 64 Inch Single Hook, Coiled Safety Cables, part # RM-643. Safety cables will keep your Saturn attached to your tow vehicle if your tow bar were to disconnect from the hitch ball.
For lighting, you can wire your Saturn with the Roadmaster Universal Hy-Power Diode Wiring Kit, part # RM-154, which will activate the running lights, brake lights and turn signals of your Saturn when it is being towed. The other option would be to use Magnetic Towing Light Kit, part # RM-2120, which attaches to your vehicle via magnets and plugs into a 4-Way connector. If you are going to be towing your Saturn often, I would recommend part # RM-154 as it would just plug into your vehicle each time you tow.
It is also recommended, and most states require that you use a supplemental brake system when flat-towing a vehicle. For this, I would recommend Roadmaster Portable Braking System, part # RM-9400, which will help reduce wear on the tow vehicles braking system and help you slow down.
Before towing your Saturn Vue, you will want to contact your Saturn or GM dealership for specific steps needed to take when flat-towing. Some vehicles must be equipped with a transmission lube pump, axle disconnect or free-wheeling hubs before being towed.
I have linked an FAQ on base plates that you may find as a good reference. Also linked are instructions and a video review of the Roadmaster Falcon 2 Tow Bar, part # RM-520. A video installation of the Roadmaster Universal Hy-Power Diode Wiring Kit, part # RM-154, on a different vehicle is also linked to show what is involved in the installation.
