Recommended Brake Controller for a 2015 Ram 1500 4x4
Question:
Hello, I have a 2015 Ram 1500 4x4 without the factory towing kit brake controller. I have a 20ft Hybrid camper that is about 3,000lb dry weight. It has 2 axles with a 2in ball. There are so many brake controllers for the Ram listed on your site, it makes it difficult to determine the differences. Im looking for one that will work well with this camper. Is there one you would recommend? Also, will i have to run wires or is the Ram pre-wired and I just need the controller and adapter cable? Thank you.

The brake controller that I recommend for you to use with your 2015 Ram 1500 is the Tekonsha Prodigy P3 # 90195. This is a proportional brake controller which means it will apply the brakes on your trailer at the same time and with the same intensity that you apply the brakes to your Ram. The P3 is also very easy to setup and features an easy-to-read LCD screen which makes adjusting the different settings a little easier to navigate. This brake controller can be plugged into the connector under your driver's side dash using the Wiring Adapter # 3024-P.
Most newer trucks come with the wires already pre-run for the brake controller, but this is not always the case. You can determine whether the wires have already been run by simply examining your current connector at the rear of your Ram. If you already have a 7-Way then you will not need to run any wires. If you have a 4-Way that is plugged into a connector then you will simply need to swap that out with the Pollak # HM40975-11933.
However if your Ram doesn't currently have a connector or if it has a 4-Way that is wired into the tail lights then you will need run some wires.
You will need to install the Tekonsha ZCI Circuit Protected Vehicle Wiring Harness with 4 Pole Harness and Hardwire Kit # 119190KIT on your Ram which will simply plug into the tail lights for the 4-Way connector. The black wire will need to be run to your battery for power.
The Universal Installation Kit # ETBC7 will be what you will use to complete the installation. This will plug into the 4-Way that you just installed, and you will just need to run the jacketed wires up to your battery and brake controller. I have attached a video of this kit being installed on a 2008 Dodge Ram for you to reference. You will want to start the video at the 2:25 mark.
Your Ram should come pre-wired but that is what you will need in the slight chance that it is not.
