Does a Weight Distribution System Reduce Tongue Weight of Trailer

Question:

Im considering the Sherline tongue weight scale. Its easy enough to figure out how to use it and measure tongue weight. But I have a weight distributing hitch so the tongue weight ends up being much less doesnt it? When the weight distributing hitch is in place the rear of the truck goes down by about half of what it goes down without the WD hitch engaged. Does this mean the effective tongue weight is half of what the scale would show? None of the stuff Im finding online to read takes into account the effect of the WD hitch on the tongue weight.

Sounds like you are trying to determine if your trailer's tongue weight is more than what your vehicle is rated for and are curious to see if a weight distribution system reduces the effective tongue weight on the vehicle. The short answer is yes the tongue weight at the rear of the vehicle is reduced, but due to how the system is installed there's no effective way to determine exactly how the tongue weight is changed.

What you need to do is check the towing capacities of the vehicle/hitch and see if there is a second capacity listed for when a weight distribution system is used. That will be the best way to determine if you are safe with your current towing setup.
