Which Equal-i-zer Weight Distribution System is Best for a 6,660 Pound Trailer

Question:

I have a 2016 Nissan NV 3500 SL and am looking to purchase a small trailer just under 26 that has a hitch weight of 660#. What setup do you recommend weight distribution w/sway control? The empty weight is rated at 5074# and gross is 6660#. Thank you.

I will be happy to help you out. Based on the gross trailer weight and the empty weight it would appear that the 660 pound listed tongue weight is either 13 percent of the empty weight or 10 percent of the gross weight. So to ensure that we select the best system for your trailer we need to look at what the tongue weight could potentially be.

Trailer tongue weight is usually 10 to 15 percent of the trailer weight. So empty and at 10 percent that would be 507 pounds. Loaded to capacity and at 15 percent that would be 999 pounds. But, when calculating tongue weight for weight distribution you also have to factor in the weight of anything loaded behind the rear axle of the tow vehicle.

A system rated for 600 to 1,000 pounds tongue weight such as # EQ37100ET will work well. I doubt that the tongue weight will be below 600 pounds or higher than 1,000 based on the empty and gross weights listed so this system has just the range you need. Equal-I-zer is also very popular and work well for both weight distribution and sway control.

The only other part I recommend is thin-walled socket # EQ70-00-4800 to install the ball into the head. There isn't a lot of space for a regular socket. I have also included some links on determining tongue weight and weight distribution for you.
