How to Extend Trailer Hitch to Clear Truck Bed Camper

Question:

I am having the same issue as the question below which was asked by another customer. Problem is, the answer that was given by you was somewhat confusing. The answer was to use a weight distibution system. My question is how is using this going to add the length I will need? Thanks in advance for any help. I have a 2013 Ram 3500HD SRW with a 2.5 factory HD hitch. I also have a slide-in camper that overhangs the bed by 28 inches. I want to pull a platform trailer with a small car total weight 6,000 lbs. Can I use a 2.5 inch extender or do I have to upgrade to a superhitch with a dual 2inch receiver and use their supertruss.

A weight distribution system like the Reese # RP66541 is not going to add the length you are needing to clear the slide-in camper on your truck bed by itself. However, to reach the 6,000 pound weight capacity on the Reese Hitch Box Extension and Reducer # RP45292 when it is fully extended, a weight distribution system needs to be installed.

Without a weight distribution system, this extension has a weight capacity of just 4,500 pounds when extended to 34 inches. When used with a weight distribution system, this capacity increases to 6,000 pounds. This is why a weight distribution system was recommended. This hitch extension is designed for use with Titan 2-1/2 inch trailer hitch receivers. If you do not have the Titan trailer hitch, you can also use the Curt # C45048, which is designed for any 2-1/2 inch hitch opening and features the same length and weight capacities as the Reese model.

Just keep in mind that when choosing a weight distribution system, the most important factor is the total tongue weight of your setup. This includes both the loaded tongue weight of your trailer, plus any added weight coming from behind the rear axle of your tow vehicle. You will want this number to fall somewhere around the middle of the weight capacity range on the system that you choose. For example, the Reese weight distribution system mentioned above has a tongue weight capacity of 500-800 pounds.

I have attached a link that will take you to our available selection of weight distribution systems for you to look through.
