Question:

Would you recommend the Thule Force XT or Hyper XL for the 2013 Subaru Outback? Which cargo box would you recommend for that car?

Both cargo carriers are excellent options. The best option would pertain to your needs and how you will be using the carrier. I recommend the Thule Motion XT Rooftop Cargo Box part # TH629706. It is one of the nicest carriers we have available. The dimensions are 77" long x 36" wide x 17" tall with the capability of hauling equipment for up to 5 people. Featuring a angled nose, the shape reduces drag by up to 35% more than standard boxes. It includes LED lights for night time loading and an integrated locking mechanism to deter theft.

The Thule Force XT Rooftop Cargo Box part # TH6358B is also another great option. It is a tad smaller measuring 82-3/4" long x 33-3/4" wide x 17-1/4" tall. The Force XT is as well capable of holding equipment for up to 5 people and also features an integrated locking mechanism.

Overall both carriers are very similar. The Motion XT in comparison to the Force XT has a more sleek profile design. In addition to the lower profile design, the finish on the Motion XT is much nicer than its counterpart. A high-gloss automotive finish with "X" design is applied to the Motion XT whereas, the Force XT is a coated rugged ABS plastic.

In regards to rear hatch clearance, you will want a minimum of 47-1/2" inches from the front crossbar to the rear hatch for the Motion XL and 51-1/8" for the Force XT. I have attached a video installation of the Thule Motion XT on a 2012 Subaru Outback which shows this as being a compatible option for your vehicle. Although we have not had a chance to test the Force XT on a Subaru Outback, the smaller dimension indicated that this would be a compatible match as well.

Attached are video reviews of both the Thule Motion XT Rooftop Cargo Box part # TH629706 and Thule Force XT Rooftop Cargo Box part # TH6358B in addition to our rooftop cargo carrier faq for your viewing.
