The first thing that you will want to do is inspect the 4-Way connector at the rear of your truck. You will want to make sure that it is free of any debris or corrosion. You will then want to test it to make sure the signal is coming through. You can use a Circuit Tester, like part # PTW2993, to see if there is any signal that is coming through.
If you have already done both of these steps, then the next thing I recommend doing is inspecting the wiring itself. You will want to look for any places where the wiring is corroded, bent, has exposed wiring, or looks damaged in any way. If you find any sections that need to be replaced then you can use 16 Gauge Wire, part # 16-1-1, along with some Butt Connectors, part # DW05744-5, to replace it.
The only other thing that I can think of is if your truck has a plug like the Curt # C55515 which fits on a 2003 Chevrolet Silverado. You might need to simply replace the connector. If you let me know the year, make, and model of your truck, I can see if we carry the correct wiring harness for your truck.
