The Curt Venturer Trailer Brake Controller # C74VV referenced in your question will flash red when applying the brake pedal if a brake circuit overload or short is detected. When working properly, the LED display will have green bars going across the screen when pressing on the brake pedal that shows the brake output being applied.

If there is a short or circuit overload, this would explain why your trailer brakes are not engaging. I recommend checking that both the vehicle and trailer side 7-way connectors are clean and free of corrosion inside where the wires attach, as well as outside on the pins. Corrosion can cause a short on the brake circuit. Cleaning them out should hopefully resolve the issue.

If everything looks okay and you still experience these problems, the next step would be to inspect the wiring and fix any pinched or damaged wires running along your vehicle.

Please let me know if these suggestions do not resolve the issue and I will be happy to look into this further.
