Can a Fixed 5th-Wheel Trailer Hitch be Used on Truck with 6-1/2 Foot Bed

Question:

BWRVK3500 Can I use the companion hitch on a 6.5 foot bed or is a slider recommended? I have the hitch and am looking for a new truck. Just curious if Im locked in to a long bed only since I dont have the slider. Thanks

With a 6.5 foot truck bed, a sliding 5th-wheel trailer hitch is recommended to ensure there will be enough clearance to make tight turns with your vehicle. Without a slider hitch, it is possible that the trailer will strike the cab of your truck when making these types of maneuvers.

An available alternative to a sliding hitch with short bed trucks is to replace the trailer's king pin with a Reese Sidewinder like # RP61422. These king pin specific replacements will provide an additional 22 inches of clearance and enable a short bed truck to use a fixed 5th-wheel hitch. However, the Reese Sidewinder is not compatible with the B&W Companion Hitches like the # BWRVK3500 referenced in your question.

I have attached an article on 5th-wheel hitches that explains the need for sliders in short bed trucks in more detail. When you do find your new truck, feel free to contact us again with the year, make and model and we will be happy to provide you with the best available options.
