Troubleshooting High Amp Draw From The Prodigy P3 Controller to Trailer Brake Magnets
Question:
Tekonsha P3 showing 23-25 amps connected to trailer with 2 10inch drum brakes. Backing plates and magnets were replaced by service center but brakes not holding and amp draw is above the 8.2 amps your sight listed as maximum for two brakes. What would cause this? FYI: P3 works as expected on other trailers Wiring was redone on trailer by service center Brakes were serviced by service center - new backing plates, magnets and pads. Thank you.

It sounds like there is a issues with the wiring somewhere on the trailer. Since your Prodigy P3, # 90195, works without any issues on other trailer, then the issue must be on the trailer.
If you have a bad or improper ground on the brake circuit, then this short will cause the increase in the amp draw. Inspect the trailer wiring to see if there are no pinched or frayed wires. Even if they did not connect the ground to a clean surface, this can cause you issues on your brakes.
Also, check for the same pinched and frayed wiring in the 7-way trailer plug on the trailer.
