Recommended Weight Distribution System that Prevents Sway for 3,500 Pound Trailer

Question:

We are newbie tours and have a 2017 Honda pilot with tow package rated at 5000 pounds. Our travel trailer GVWR is 3500 pounds, the hitch weight is 280. Im assuming the TW is between 300 and 475 TV TW limit is 500 but I havent picked it up yet and have not had a chance to weigh it. So the dealer couldnt give me a straight answer on whether or not the trailer hitch is rated for WD or not. They said the frame may be too small for it ?Its a 2017 Jayco SLX 174bh. They were pushing for the Reese friction sway bar but Id really like something that will prevent sway, not just correct it. Like one of the straightline systems. Can you make any recommendations or tell me if such a product exists that will prevent sway? Thanks so much.

When choosing the best weight distribution system for your setup, the most important factor to consider is your total tongue weight. This number will include both the loaded tongue weight of your trailer (everything loaded as if ready to go on a trip) and any added weight coming from behind the rear axle of the tow vehicle. You will want the total tongue weight to fall somewhere around the middle of the weight capacity range of the weight distribution system you choose.

Typically the tongue weight is going to be around 10-15% of the trailer's total weight. Using the 3,500 pound GVWR of your travel trailer, this gives us an estimated tongue weight of around 350-525 pounds loaded. We can leave a little wiggle room to account for the weight coming from behind the tow vehicle's rear axle.

Using this range, I recommend looking at the Reese Straight-Line Weight Distribution System w/ Sway Control # RP66082. This system has a tongue weight capacity range of 200-600 pounds and should be perfect for your towing setup. As you mentioned in your question, this particular system features the unique dual-cam design that will actually stop trailer sway before it even begins. Other than preventing sway, this weight distribution system will also create a more level ride for both your Honda Pilot and trailer. I have attached a video review of this product for you to check out.

The only other thing you will need is a compatible hitch ball like the B&W # BWHB94050.

Researching the Jayco SLX 174BH and looking at pictures, I do not see any compatibility issues with a weight distribution system. I do still recommend verifying this with the dealer though as your specific model may be different and they will have the most accurate information for the trailer.

I have also attached a link that will take you to our selection of weight distribution systems that prevent sway as well as a helpful article on the subject that you may find helpful.
