A weight distribution with sway control is generally our first recommendation before air bags. Air bags will help keep the ride level but a weight distribution system will actively reduce sway, help level the ride, and most importantly reduce the amount of stress on the rear axle. The key is choosing a weight distribution system rated appropriately for your setup.
To choose the correct system you'll need to find out your trailer's loaded and ready to tow tongue weight. I've linked an article on this. The surest way is to use a tongue weight scale, # e99044, and weigh it. The article explains some other ways as well. In addition to the trailer's tongue weight, you'll also need to add in the amount of weight you have stored behind your truck's rear axle. These added together will give you the total tongue weight, which is what you'll use to find a weight distribution system. You want your total tongue weight to call somewhere in the middle of what the system is rated for.
With a trailer that can weigh up to 10,000 pounds I suggest the # EQ37120ET which is rated for 1,200 pounds of tongue weight. Your trailer's tongue weight should be at least 1,000 pounds and maybe more. Plus, like I mentioned, you'll need to factor in any weight stored behind the truck's rear axle. Your setup will put your total tongue weight over the 1,200 pounds tongue weight then you can go up to the 1,400 system, # EQ37140ET.
