Recommended 4-Bike Carrier For 2017 Subaru Forester With 1-1/4 Inch Trailer Hitch
Question:
My family and I would like to get a 4 bike rack. We have 2017 Subaru Forester with a factory hitch- I believe its 1 1/4 inch. I see a good number of hanging racks for this size, but not sure if these would work for my wifes bike. Its a step in Electra Townie- it would have to be connected at an angle. I think the platform racks would work better, but would like to confirm that. Also, all of these platform racks are for 2 inch mounts, but I see you see adapters for 1.25 inch to 2 inch- would that work for a rack like this ? thank you

If the trailer hitch on your 2017 Forester is a Class l hitch, it is limited to carrying 2-bikes.
If you have a Class ll hitch we have a hanging bike carrier that can carry 4 bikes, but as you said your wife's Electra Townie may ride a bit uneven due to the frame. I recommend the Thule Hitching Post Pro, part # TH934XTR. This bike carrier holds the bikes at 3 points to help prevent sway and bike contact. The weight limit for bikes with this carrier is 35-lbs per bike.
You cannot use any adapters that allow a 2-inch bike carrier to be used with a 1-1/4 inch trailer hitch.
For carrying bikes with alternative frames like kids bikes or women's bikes I recommend using an adapter bar like part # 64005. This attaches between the seat post and the handlebar stem and allows the bike to be carried more level in the carrier while providing additional ground clearance. I have attached a product review video for this adapter bar.
