Will SMI Air Force One Supplemental Braking System Work with 2015 Toyota 4Runner

Question:

My 2015 Toyota 4runner TRD Pro has a electric braking system and I need to make sure that it will work with the air force one. I thought you can only use this with an active brake system?

I spoke with my contact at SMI and he stated that the Air Force One Supplemental Braking System # SM99243 referenced in your question will work with all towed vehicles, including your 2015 Toyota 4Runner. This system has the necessary provisions and instructions for vacuum boosted brakes, active brakes and hydroboost brakes. My contact states that your 4Runner most likely has hydroboost of some sort, but to verify this, a simple test can be performed.

With the key in the tow position, simply step on the brake pedal 3-5 times. If the pedal becomes stiffer, than the hydroboost instructions should be followed when dealing with the vacuum section of the installation. The vacuum section begins at Step 5 in the installation details. If the pedal remains soft, then the active brakes instructions should be followed. This system is also designed to use with motorhomes that have air brakes.
