What is Needed to Install a Brake Controller and 7-Way Connector on a 2006 Volvo XC70
Question:
Will the Curt 51140 work on my vehicle? I have a 2006 Volvo XC70. I would like to keep it below $75 for a brake controller, not sure why ETrailer suggests a $275 item, instead of the $64 Curt 51140 product. Can you check the compatibility with this product and my vehicle? Also- can you suggest a product or set of products that would provide me with a 7 pole connector on my Volvo? THANKS

We carry many different models of brake controllers that can fit a variety of applications. However, the wiring design of your 2006 Volvo XC70 will not allow for a brake controller to be hardwired in the vehicle.
The Tekonsha Prodigy RF Brake Controller, # TK94FR, will be the only option that will allow you to run your electric trailer brakes from your Volvo. The power module will be mounted on the tongue of your trailer and connect to your vehicles 7-way connecter for power and your vehicle's lighting functions. The hand held unit will connect at a 12-volt accessory connector in the dash.
For the Prodigy RF to function, a 4-pole flat harness and a 7-way connecter will need to be installed. The Trailer Wiring Harness Kit, # C59236, will connect your vehicle's lighting to your trailer's lighting. This kit includes a modulite converter to help protect your vehicle's wiring from overload from running your trailer lights. The kit will include a tester to help you find the correct vehicle wires you will splice into to connect this harness.
The # ETBC7 kit will allow you to connect your 4-pole flat harness and power the Prodigy RF controller. There are two wires that you will need to install on the 7-way. One will be the white ground. The other will be a 12-volt power wire. Using the 2-wire duplex wire connect the 40 amp circuit an wire to the positive post of your battery. Then connect this wire to the 12-volt power pin on the 7-way. Looking at the back of the 7-way, the 12-volt pin is located in the 11 o'clock position. Reference the attached picture on pin location.
I have attached an article on trailer wiring and installation videos on the 4-pole connecter and the Prodigy RF for you to review.
