Recommended Location of Top Step on RV Ladder
Question:
What is optimum vertical location of the top step when measured from the roof. I have seen RV ladders that have the top step 12-15inch inches below the roof line and I have seen some with the top step almost even with the roof. My top step is 2 inches below the roof and I think it is extremely difficult to use. It is difficult to exit the roof. I will buy a replacement ladder if necessary to fix this problem. What do you think is the optimum location for the top step?

There is not really a recommended location for the top step of an RV ladder such as the Surco Universal Exterior RV Ladder # SP501L. Where this top step ends up being will depend a lot on the roof design and how the ladder is able to mount. Ultimately it is going to be a question of personal comfort/usability as to how far below the roof you want the step to be.
Also keep in mind that with RV ladders, you will need to mount it where there are structural/frame components strong enough to handle the load. So in some cases, the required positioning of the steps/ladder may not leave much room for adjustability.
The RV Ladder # SP501L has 7 steps and pivoting mounting brackets at the top of the ladder to ensure a secure fit to the RV roof. I have attached a video review of this product so you can get a better idea of how it looks to see if it would be an improvement over your current model.
