Recommendation for a Roof Mounted Cargo Basket on a 2013 Subaru Outback
Question:
I was looking for a roof basket for my 2013 Subaru Outback. I see the Rola roof basket as an option and of course the Yakima and Thule. Could you tell me the pros and cons of each. I also heard about rusting dripping to the roof of the car, is that true? Also what would be better, roof basket or a roof tray? I plan on going camping maybe 2-3 times a year. Maybe put a 50inch tent on top, stroller. Going to the snow maybe 1-2 times a year.

When deciding on a cargo basket or tray for your 2013 Subaru Outback you will have to keep in mind your crossbar spread and the clearance you will need to open the rear cargo area of your car. If the basket is too long, then the rear cargo door may make contact with the basket when trying to open.
With that in mind, I like the Yakima LoadWarrior Roof Rack, # Y07070, because it is a cargo rack that is designed for smaller vehicles, like your Outback. The rack is constructed of a sturdy galvanized steel that will provide strength as well as resisting rust corrosion. Many of the older baskets were not galvanized or powdered coated and some did drip rusty water on the roof of the vehicle. However, the new designs and coatings have eliminated this problem.
The LoadWarrior also includes a wind fairing to help reduce the noise and vibration that occur with many cargo racks as well as being lightweight at 25 lbs.
Another basket that would work great on your 2013 Outback is the SportRack Roof Basket # SR9035. This basket weighs 24 lbs and has black powder coat finish the strong and rust resistant.
This rack will mount to round, square, aero, and most factory crossbars. The SportRack basket also can be extended to an extra 22 inches in length with the addition of # SR9036 Extension.
I like the cargo baskets over the trays like # JA8504, because the baskets give you more mounting points to secure cargo.
