How to Choose the Correct Weight Distribution System for My Towing Application

Question:

I have a 2014 Tundra Crew Max and plan on towing a Dutchman 213RBSL which has a dry hitch weight of 551 lbs. I know the BXW0550 model will not be enough, but I’m unsure as to whether to go with the BXW0750 or BXW1000. I don’t anticipate more than 750 lbs of cargo in the trailer and 400lbs in the truck so I believe the BXW0750 would be the correct fit, but is there any drawbacks to going with the higher capacity BXW1000?

Before you can choose which weight distribution system you will need, you first need to know the total tongue weight of your towing rig. The total tongue weight will be a fully loaded ready to tow trailer, plus any cargo that will be stowed behind the rear axle of your tow vehicle. I have attached an article that explains how to find the total tongue weight of your towing rig and I recommend using the # e99044 trailer tongue scale for this purpose.

Once you have found your total tongue weight, then you can decide on which weight distribution system will work the best for your towing application. Weight distributions systems work on tongue weight ranges. It is recommended that when choosing a system you should tray to find one were you total tongue weight falls almost in the middle of the systems tongue weight range. For example, the Blue Ox SwayPro, # BXW0750, that you referenced has a tongue weight range of 550 to 750 lbs. Ideally to use this system, you will want your total tongue weight to fall somewhere in between the systems range.

If you find that your total tongue weight falls within the range of the Blue OX SwayPro, # BXW0750, then I can recommend this system for your truck and trailer. The Blue Ox system includes anti-sway that will help prevent side-to-side trailer sway. This system also trunnion bar design will flex to provide a controlled and even ride.

If you try to use a system that is rated too high, then you will be putting undue stress on both the trailer and your vehicle. Also, if the system is rated too low, then you would be defeating the purpose of a weight distribution system due to this systems lack of sufficient distribution.

I have linked a product demo video and a help article with more info on weight distribution for your to review.
