Connecting Tekonsha Voyager Brake Controller To A Tag Axle On A 1997 Winnebago Motorhome
Question:
I have purchased a 97 Winnebago Adventurer with a Jet tag axle. The tag has a Tekonsha Voyager electric brake controller. One of the previous owners has cut the wires to each wheel. I put a meter on the wires and have 13v without the brake pedal depressed. There also is no light on the controller. I would appreciate it if you can offer any suggestions as I am trying to get this thing inspected and the mechanic wants the tag brakes in service.

You will want to check the connections of your brake controller. It sounds like you might have the black wire and the blue wire on the brake controller switched and the wire to the brakes on the tag axle is getting constant power from the black power wire.
The brake controller will have 4 wires on the back of the controller box. The white wire is the ground wire and should be grounded to the vehicle frame on the negative post of the vehicle's battery.
The red wire is the brake switch wire and needs to be attached to the cold side of the stop light wire on the brake switch. To make sure it is attached to the cold side of the stoplight wire you will want to use a circuit tester like the part # PTW2993 and test the wires extending from the brake switch. You will want the red wire attached to the brake switch wire that will only show power when the brakes are depressed.
The black wire is the battery power wire and supplies power to the brake controller. You will want to make sure this wire is attached to the vehicle's battery with a 20 amp in-line circuit breaker. Some vehicles with factory tow packages already have this wire run from under the dash to the battery with some kind of circuit protection.
The blue wire is brake output to the trailer brakes. This wire will be connected to the brakes on the tag axle.
I am including links to a FAQ page on brake controllers and installation instructions on the Tekonsha Voyager brake controller.
