Recommended Weight Distribution System For Trailer With 1,100-lb Tongue Weight
Question:
Hi, I purchased a keystone outback 330rl 37 foot travel trailer. In the specs Tongue weight is 1100 and fully loaded weight is 10500. Although I am sure I would not exceed 10000 . I tow with a RAM 2500 and sometimes have about 100-200 pounds behind the axle. The RV sales man suggested I go with a 12000 pound Equalizer hitch. As I am close to this hitches max would I be better going to a 14000 pound hitch?

It is good you are concerned about the total tongue weight before selecting a weight distribution hitch. The best way to find the right system is to get the tongue weight of your trailer when it is fully-loaded and ready to tow. Then add the weight of the cargo placed behind the rear axle of your Ram. You want to find a system where the total tongue weight is near the middle of the WD system tongue weight range. Selecting a system with too low of a capacity means the system is essentially useless and choosing a system too large results in a stiff and uncomfortable ride.
You can use a tongue weight scale like part # e99044 to make sure you get an accurate tongue weight of your trailer.
Based on the numbers you provided you are looking at a total tongue weight around 1,300-lbs. I recommend a system like the Reese Strait-Line, part # RP66075. This system has sway control built-in and has a tongue weight range between 1000 and 1,700 lbs.
This system does not come with an adjustable shank or hitch ball. For a shank I recommend part # RP54977. This has a 5-3/4 inch drop or 8-1/4 inch rise.
The 2-5/16 hitch ball I recommend is part # 63840.
If you find your total tongue weight is different, let me know and I will make some recommendations that will work for you.
