Comparing LT Tires To ST Tires For Maximum Speed Rating And Handling

Question:

It deems that LT tires would be better than ST tires for high speed trailering 70 MPH as long as they were used within their load rating. I am just pulling a small utility trailer with a dirt bike 250 lbs. Wouldnt 14 inch LT tires be better for this situation than the small ST tires found on most trailers? Thanks

The ST tires will actually be a better option for a small utility trailer than LT tires. LT tires are for Light Truck applications and can be used on trailers, but they are not made specifically for trailers. They are made to have not as strong a sidewall because they are made to adapt for turning. ST trailer tires are made to have a very strong side wall and are made specifically to track for use on a trailer application. I know LT sounds more durable and strong, but that isn't the case. I've attached a link on trailer tires as well as one that gives basic information on tires.

There are two types of LT or ST trailer tires, radial and bias. The bias ply tires are made for smaller utility trailers and off-road durability. Radial tires are made for faster speeds and highway driving. It sounds like you are looking for that high speed ability.

My recommendation for 14 inch tires is the Westlake Westlake ST205/75R14 Radial Trailer Tire w/ 14" Silver Mod Wheel - 5 on 4-1/2 - Load Range D # 274-000053. These tires have a speed rating of L with a maximum speed of 75 mph.

We don't carry LT tires in the 14 inch wheel size.
