Recommended Platform Bike Rack With Wheel Mount For Carbon Fiber Bike At Highway Speed

Question:

We will be traveling cross country with two bikes: One cannondale carbon frame and one Trek hybrid. Driving a 2009 Volvo C-70 convertible. We have a the smaller diameter hitch 1 1/4 I think...not the 2. What do you recommend for maximum stability at highway speeds? Do carbon frame bikes require a platform rack?

Expert Reply:

For your two specific bikes, one with carbon fiber frame, I recommend the Thule T2 Pro , # TH23JV. This rack will fit the 1-1/4 inch hitch receiver on your 2009 Volvo C-70 Convertible.

I recommend this Thule rack because it gives you the stability you will desire without any frame contact. Carbon fiber frames are great for less weight, but they aren't as durable under pressure. Hanging mount options would put stress on the top tube of your bike as could frame clamp bike racks. This particular platform-style rack with hold the bikes by the front wheel with ratcheting hooks and the rear wheel will be secured with a sliding cradle and ratcheting straps. This Thule rack also has one key locks to deter theft. There is a hitch lock as well as an integrated cable lock.

No tools are required for this installation. I've attached a video for you to check out. This rack also allows you to tilt the rack away from your vehicle even with bikes loaded for cargo access and it folds up for storage when not in use. This is an excellent rack for your specific application.
