Weight Distribution for a 2003 GMC Towing a Trailer
Question:
I have a 2003 GMC with a tow compacity of 7800lbs. The trailer I am looking at getting is 7100lbs. Am I looking at a trailer that weighs too much or will I be able to pull it?

Although you are getting fairly close to capacity, you should be able to tow that trailer. Keep in mind, that you will only be able to load 700 lbs of gear on that trailer, before you exceed that limit. Although in your instance, a weight distribution (W/D) system would not extend your vehicle's towing capacity, you might still benefit from using one. A W/D system would help eliminate any sqat in the rear of your vehicle that your experience with the trailer hooked up. Using a W/D system can also improve performance in steering, traction, and stopping while also decreasing trailer sway. With a trailer such as the one you mention, I would recommend the Reese High Performance Trunnion System, item # RP66021. This system will handle tongue weights between 400 and 800 lbs. This system will also work with the Dual Cam High Performance Sway Control System, item # RP26002. This top of the line system will prevent trailer sway before it can begin.
