Tire Traction Devices for Use on 2016 Buick Envision with P235/50-19 Size Tires

Question:

I have a 2016 Buick Envision with P235 50 19 tires. The owners manual says no tire chains but it also says if traction devices are used put them on the front wheels. I live in Washington and travel in the western states which require one carry chains traction devices even though they acknowledge that AWD vehicles with All Season Tires are not required to wear them. California goes so far as to say if you need chains on an AWD, the road will be closed. I have felt behind the wheel and the space is indeed tight but your webpage suggests that I can in fact get something that meets the law and actually works. Is that correct? Has someone actually installed set on an envision? Should I consider socks? We are off on a trip in a few weeks and I hate to buy a set of junker chains to meet the law. The officer might actually suggest I show that they fit. It has been known to happen.

A vehicle with limited wheel well clearance will often be described by the auto maker as being unsuitable for using tire chains. Unfortunately, and as you noted, many municipalities will legally require traction devices under certain conditions. Some auto makers will indicate that certain low-profile chains, termed S Class products, can be used on certain tire sizes and often on one specific axle only. But in the end, usually the letter of the law wins out over an owner's manual!

I did review an online edition of your owner's manual and on page 357 it notes not to use chains, but that "another type of traction device" may be used if approved by its maker for your tire size. For the P235/50-19 size tires on your 2016 Buick Envision we offer one such alternate S Class traction product, the ISSE Hybrid Snow Socks # TCH70.

These consist of polyolefin fabric that is fitted with carbon steel rivets for better bite on ice. The snow socks are designed in Europe and are made to meet the Colorado Department of Transportation specifications. As with all tire chains and similar items, always drive at a reduced speed (not exceeding 30-mph) and exercise extra caution, allowing more time for slowing/stopping. Only use snow socks on snowy or icy surfaces; never drive on bare pavement.
