Thule Motion XT & Sonic XL Cargo Box Fits on 2007 Subaru Outback & 2013 Subaru Crosstrek
Question:
Does Thule Motion XT fit on a 2007 subaru outback hatchback with factory bars? Does it also fit on a 2013 subaru cross trek hatchback with factory bars? You video show 2014 subaru outback and a 2014 subaru cross trek with thule bars. I was also wondering about the Thule Sonic xl. Does it fit on a 2007 subaru outback hatchback with factory bars? Does it also fit on a 2013 subaru cross trek hatchback with factory bars? I want to find a box large enough for 189cm skis, but still have clearance for my hatch to open. Many thanks.

It is easy to find out if the Thule Motion XT # TH629706 rooftop cargo box will fit your vehicles' factory bars and also allow your rear hatches to open without any interference.
First, let's talk about bar fit. Both carriers have mounting hardware that will fit on factory crossbars up to 3-1/2-inches wide x 1-11/16-inches tall. Just measure your bars to confirm they are compatible with the mounting hardware.
Second, we will consider the bar spread on each car. Both boxes work on crossbars with a center-to-center bar spread between 23-5/8-inches and 36-7/8 inches. If the front bars are moveable, position them as far forward as possible to maximize hatch clearance and to ensure their spread falls into the range above.
Last, from the center of the front crossbar on each car, measure back to the roof/hatch seam. In order to mount the Motion XT without hatch interference you need at least 47-1/2 inches. In order to mount the Sonic XL you need at least 50-7/8-inches.
Both boxes have the internal length you need for your 189cm skis.
Both boxes also have about the same empty weight; 42-lbs for the Motion XT and 51-lbs for the Sonic XL, so not much difference. Do note though that each car will have a finite roof weight capacity that cannot be exceeded. The weight of the box AND its cargo together cannot exceed either car's capacity. Check your owner's manuals or speak to your local dealerships.
One final thought: a suggestion. A simple and inexpensive folding step, I really like the Telesteps # TE97FR, will help make installing, loading and unloading the box a lot easier. Since it is light and folds up it is easy to take along for the trip.
