Trailer Brakes Will Not Lock Up with Factory Brake Controller on a 2014 Chevy Silverado 2500

Question:

I have a 2014 Chevy Duramax 2500 with build in brake control. When I adjust the controller to 10 the max the wheels on the trailer never lock up. There is some resistance but not a lot. I had a 2004 Chevy 2500 before with a aftermarket brake controller and it would lock the wheels up.. I have a 35 foot sabra made by Forest River, weights about 8500 lb empty.

When was the last time you adjusted the brakes on the trailer? On trailers with electric brakes when the brakes start to get weak 9 times out of 10 it is because the brakes have to be adjusted. I have linked a video showing how to adjust electric brakes. Fast forward to about the 4:35 mark of the video. You could use a screwdriver to adjust the brakes but I recommend adjustment spoon # W80630 because it is shaped and designed for this purpose.

If the brakes are adjusted out as far as they will go then it is likely time to change the shoes (or whole assembly).

Another possible option is that the magnets are worn. You can visually inspect the magnets and if you can see the copper windings coming through then they will need to be replaced. To further test the magnets you can follow the help article I have linked for you.
