Parts Needed to Flat Tow a 2013 Jeep Wrangler Unlimited with Off-Road Bumper Using D-Rings

Question:

We purchased a motorhome and would like to flat tow our 2013 Jeep Wrangler Sport Unlimited with aftermarket front bumper with d-rings. I see the d-ring adapters for things like the Blue Ox Alpha tow bar. Im concerned that the metal on metal attachment would scratch up the powder coating on the bumper and mounts leaving an eye soar and rust when the tow bar is removed. This seems to be a popular combo so Im guessing Im missing something?

We do have adapters by Blue Ox that are designed to connect your Jeep's D-rings with a Blue Ox tow bar. The Adapter Lugs # BX88296 will fit a bumper that has 7/8 inch diameter lug pins. They are compatible with the Blue Ox Alpha Tow Bar # BX7380. I see your concern of the adapter lugs scratching the paint on your Jeep's bumper because it's likely going to happen. Unfortunately, with the metal on metal contact there isn't much that can be done other than to apply some paint to the affected areas to prevent rust.

Other components you'll need to flat tow you Jeep are a lighting kit, a braking system, and possibly a high-low adapter. I've linked several articles on flat towing that you might find helpful.

To power the Jeep's lights so you have brake and turn signals you can use the Roadmaster Tail Light Wiring Kit # RM-155. This bypasses the Wrangler's wiring and installs into the tail lights. It adds an additional bulb in the tail light assembly that's on its own circuit instead of the Jeep's.

For a supplemental braking system I recommend the Stay-IN-Play DUO # SM99251. The initial install is more involved than some other systems but after that it's one of the easiest to use. You just flip a switch when you're ready to tow.

Finally, you'll likely need a high-low adapter to keep everything level. I've linked our selection of high-low adapters for you and an article to help you determine the correct rise or drop you need for your application.
