Bike Rack Recommendation for Subaru 2017 Subaru Outback with Factory 1-1/4 Inch Trailer Hitch

Question:

TH9042 looks just like the photo of the Subaru accessory Thule bike rack. One of your experts has recommended only the TH9028XT for this hitch due to spacing of the pin hole. Clearance is 4.5 inches on TH9042, 6.5 inches on TH9028XT. Do they both work on this vehicle with sufficient security and hatch clearance?

The issue with the factory Subaru hitch on your 2017 Outback is that its pin hole is too close to the receiver opening to be able to use most bike racks safely. The Thule # TH9042PRO will not work with the factory hitch due to the pin hole location. It isn't an issue with clearance between the bike rack and the vehicle. It is a problem with not enough of a bike rack shank fitting into the receiver because of the pin hole placement on the hitch.
