Hopkins 12-Volt Power Inverter Adapter for 7-Way, RV Trailer Connector Hopkins Wiring Code: HM111

Question:

Im in the process of refurbishing my utility trailer. Im wondering if I could use this plug to power 12V LED lights that I like to mount along the trailer rails inwards of trailer floor? Maybe place an inline switch? Im out with the kids and theres been many times when we get to the trailer after sunset to load camping equipment or bikes with minimal light. So Im just wondering if I idle the truck for power and plumb these lights/wiring with this plug be a solution? Or any other easier way I could provide light to the trailer? With truck on or off? Thanks in advance...

The Hopkins 12-Volt Power Inverter Adapter for 7-Way, # HM11147650, is designed to wire a power inverter that will take the DC power from your vehicle's battery and turn it into AC power. You could use the plug to wire in a set of LED lights, like # ILL22CB. However, this will leave you with an extra plug connected to your trailer.

If you already have a 7-way connector and plug on your vehicle and trailer, then you could run power off the 12-volt power line of the truck to operate your LED lights. Typically, the 12-volt power wire would be located the 7-way connector on the vehicle at the pin located at 1 o'clock and on the plug at 11 o'clock. Using a tester, like # PTW2993, you can test the pin on the vehicle to make sure that you have power coming from the battery.

If you are using the 4-flat plug to run the lights on your trailer, you can wire the LED lights into the running lights of the trailer. You will be able to operate the LED when you turn your truck's lights on while connected to the trailer.

I have included a help article on trailer wiring for you.
