Can an Older 14k Reese 5th Wheel Trailer Hitch Handle a 1998 Jayco 285ct 5th Wheel Trailer

Question:

Need to know if an older Reese 14K slider hitch will handle a 1998 model 285CT Jayco trailer. Have been using a 15K Reese, but have changed trucks and have to have a slider now. Thanks for your help,

In terms of weight capacity, a 14k 5th Wheel trailer hitch is capable of handling the weight of a 1998 Jayco 285ct trailer, provided, of course, that the trailer, loaded and ready to tow, weighs under 14,000 pounds. Make sure that the older 14k hitch is in good working order with no worn parts and that it is properly lubricated. There also could be an issue with the short bed truck and the width of the trailer. You will need to take some measurements to make sure you will have enough clearance to make 90 degree turns.

First, measure the distance from the center of the hitch jaw to the back of the cab and then add the travel distance of the slider. This is measurement A. If the trailer has an extended pin box, also add the distance from the center of the king pin back to the front of the trailer. Next, measure the width of the trailer and dived by 2 to get half. This is measurement B. Subtract B from A to get the clearance. You will need 4 inches or more clearance to safely make 90 degree turns.

If you find that you will not have enough clearance, a sidewinder may be needed. To determine which sidewinder you will need you will need to find the manufacturer and model number of the pin box on the trailer and then use the conversion chart, linked below, to determine which, if any, sidewinder will fit.
