Troubleshooting Weak Trailer Brakes with Worn Wiring to the Magnets

Question:

I noticed my trailer brakes seemed weak, so tried to set them up properly, however this had little if any effect on braking. I took tire are off and found the wires going to the magnet have rubbed through the coating to the bare wire. Could this affect the way the brakes are working, will it cause poor braking if the two wires are shorting to the frame?

Expert Reply:

Exposed bare wires can definitely be causing a short or bad ground which will definitely effect your braking. You'll want to repair the wiring. Also, if the brake magnets themselves are worn down to the copper wiring you'll want to replace them.
