Subaru tends to say that you cannot use tire chains in the vehicle owner's manuals and the 2017 Outback is no different. But if you are somewhere where chains are required by law you don't really have a choice. The law is the law.

So what I recommend is going with something that requires the least amount of clearance. For your 225/60-18 tires the best option are the K-Summit chains # TH02230K66. They are expensive but they are built to last and no part of them will be between the inner sidewall and the vehicle so nothing can get damaged.

The second best option are the snow socks # TCH74. Since these are not chains but fabric instead they require less clearance than any chain. Since they are fabric the chance that they could damage something on the vehicle is slim to none.
