Recommended Fifth Wheel Trailer Hitch For 2014 Dodge Ram 2500 With 6-Ft Bed And Factory Puck System

Question:

Hi, I was hoping to get some guideance on what fifth wheel hitch I will need for my set up. I have little knowledge on fifth wheel hitches, only what I have researched online. Just a little background I had a gooseneck adapter for my trailer and it did not work out so I require a fifth wheel hitch. Also, I had clearance issues with side of truck bed and pin box when gooseneck was on, dont know if that matters with fifth wheel hitch. I have a 2014 Ram 2500 crew cab, 6ft bed, with factory puck system I am pulling a 2015 34foot Wildcat 312bhx 12,000lbs GVWR. I am searching for a a fifth wheel hitch which is lightest so my wife and I can take it off, due to a roll up tonneau cover we have for security reasons. I know I will likely need a slider hitch. Through my research the best one Ive found for our needs is the PullRite superglide 16K ratinginch which is at 150lbs + puck system adapter. Do you guys recommend anything different? Will that weight rating be acceptable for the trailer weight? Also, how do you decide height of the hitch you will need for your specific trailer? Ive also looked in Reese sidewinderinch pin box, but I am not interested in those. Thank you so much in advance!

The fifth wheel hitch I recommend for your 2014 Ram 2500 is the Demco Hijacker Premier Series Ultra Slide, part # DM6076P-UL-16K. We have had very good customer reviews for this hitch. It has polyurethane bumpers that help make the ride smoother, and has a wraparound steel jaw that helps reduce chucking and jarring.

This hitch has a 16,000-lb weight capacity and has 4 height settings between 16 and 19 inches. You will want to have a total of 6 inches of clearance between the bed rails of your truck and the overhang of your trailer when it is sitting level and connected. This hitch will provide you 8-inches of additional travel front to back for clearance when you are making turns with your trailer.

You will also need the adapter that fits in the puck system and provides a base for the hitch. That number is part # DM6099.

You can take a measurement that will determine how much height you need when choosing a hitch. You will need to measure from the bottom of the pin box (not king pin), of your trailer down to the ground when it is sitting level. Next you will need to measure from the floor of your truck bed to the ground. Subtract this number from the pin box height and that is how high of a hitch you would need.

If you do not have a wiring harness for your trailer in the bed of your truck I recommend part # 50-97-410.
