Compatibility of Tire Chains That Will Fit a 2009 Dodge Ram Pickup With P275/60-R20 tires

Question:

I have a 2009 Dodge Ram 4x2 with P275/60R20 tires. Owners manual says that S chains are only allowed on a P245/70R17 tire. Ive noticed that your site sells chains to fit a P275/60R20 tire and Ive seen your video of the install on a 2009 Ram. Is there not a spacing issue on these trucks? Any assistance you can provide would be greatly appreciated!

According to the manual, as you noted, only the P245/70-R17 size tires should be used with Class S tire chains. Since Dodge does not recommend using chains with your size tires, there is likely a clearance issue at the back of the tire.

Should you choose to use tire chains in order to comply with local laws, a minimal clearance option are SAE Class S tire chains, which are designed for use on vehicles with restricted wheel well clearance. You will need to measure the clearance between your tire and wheel well to see if you can fit a set of S rated chains on your vehicle. The attached diagram and information shows you where to measure and what the minimum clearances you will need to install the chains.

If your vehicle has enough clearance for S rated chains, then I recommend the Glacier Cable Snow Tire Chains # PW3029C. These chains use a ladder design to provide improved traction on snow and ice, while having a low profile to fit vehicles with tight clearances in the wheel well.
