If you have the factory tow package with a 4-pole already on your 2002 Ford F-150 XLT you could use the Tow Ready Ford Replacement OEM Tow Package Wiring Harness, 7-Way, part # 118242. This wiring harness will install inline to your vehicles wiring harness and the 4-way will stay and be able to function. So you will have a 7-way and a 4-way at the rear of your vehicle. I am including a link to the installation instructions for the Tow Ready wiring Harness.
If you do not have the factory tow package and a 4-pole at the rear of your vehicle you can use the Curt Adapter 4 Pole to 7 Pole and 4 Pole w/Test Lamps, part # C57674. This adapter will plug into your 4-pole connector and the four remaining wires will need to be connected.
The white wire (ground) definitely needs to be hooked up for your vehicle to power the lights on the trailer. You need to make sure the ground is mounted to a clean metal surface for a good connection.
The extra wires do not need to be hooked up if you do not have brakes or a battery to be charged while towing. The extra black wire is 12v power and is used for charging the trailer battery, the blue wire is for a brake controller and connects to the blue output wire of the brake controller, and the yellow wire is for auxiliary power or reverse lights. You do not need to hook these wires up if your trailer does not require these functions.
