Recommended Weight Distribution System on 2014 Toyota Tacoma Towing a 3,900 Pound Trailer
Question:
Own a GulfStream 188RB travel trailer that is 18foot long. Towing with 2014 Tacoma 6CYL. Want to get weight distribution system. Have sway control bar, but would like weight distribution. Hitch or tongue weight is 360lbs. net cargo is 850lbs. The dry weight is 3,010lbs. What weight distribution system would you recommend that would permit backing up with electric brakes.

The most important factor in choosing a weight distribution system is the total tongue weight of your setup. This is the tongue weight of your loaded and ready to tow trailer, and any weight that is in the back of your Tacoma behind the rear axle.
Your loaded trailer is approximatley 3,900 pounds. So your trailer's tongue weight is usually about 10 to 15 percent of the trailer's weight or most likely somewhere between 390 to 580 pounds. Then factor in how much weight is behind the rear axle in the back of your truck. You want to make sure you choose a system that is rated high enough but not too high. If it's rated too high your ride will be extremely rigid, too low and the system won't be able to do its job.
I like the Reese Steadi-Flex System # RP66558. It's rated for 600 pounds tongue weight. I have first hand experience in a truck using the Steadi-Flex (See video) and you can definitely feel the difference. It uses friction pads similar to automobile brake pads for the friction to keep the trailer in line. It does not come with a hitch ball, for a 2 inch ball use # 63845 and for 2-5/16 inch ball use # 63847.
