When Setting Fifth Wheel Hitch Head Height for Leveling Trailer Does Suspension Sag Get Factored

Question:

It says to get measurement of king pin and skid plate the same. When you lower the trailer on the truck, the truck is going to go down in the rear and the trailer is going down in the nose, or do you raise the skid plate to compensate for truck squatting so that the trailer stays as level as possible?

Expert Reply:

Ideally you want the trailer to sit as level as possible with at least 6 inches of clearance from the truck bed rails to the overhang of the trailer. If the suspension of the vehicle does sag when you put the weight of the trailer on it then you will need to compensate for that with the height of the fifth wheel hitch head.
